As we here in the United States remember those who were lost in the tragedy of September 11, 2001, we struggle to make sense of senselessness and to bring fairness to a world that seems so unfair. In Haiti, those who survived the devastating earthquake six years ago continue to suffer. The cholera outbreak that began when UN peacekeepers came after the earthquake is still killing innocent people. According to Partners in Health, cholera is expected to sicken 50,000 Haitians in 2016. This is by far the biggest spike in numbers of cases the country has seen in years. The world can seem so unfair.
Last month, VPI received a plea for help from one of the Haitian physicians it supports at Mombin Hospital. “We have about 34 cases of cholera and 3 patients died this month. This is a critical situation. As you know, a lot of people drink contaminated water, they have no latrines and in some areas the people are not educated about hygiene. Right now we are getting more and more people coming to the hospital with diarrhea and vomiting. We need more medicine and products to treat the water. We are very worried. Please can you help us?”
