New Business Enterprises: One of the goals of our involvement with the village of Papoli is to create the opportunity for residents to become self-sustainable. To that end, two new businesses have begun. First is a stationary/computer use store in nearby Tororo, Uganda and secondly, a chair/tent rental enterprise are currently providing income for Papoli. Negotiations for a tract of land are now underway for a community garden to provide produce to sell by the highway. New Baby Incubators: On our first trip to Uganda, while visiting the hospital in the city of Tororo, a small wooden box with 3 premature infants sat in a dark room. The light came from a kerosene lamp, and the only heat for the three infants inside came from a light bulb under the box. This was all they had. With the help of St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, Col. Steven Howard, the CDC, and members of the US Air Force, 2 functioning incubators were delivered to Uganda, and Emmanuel was able to transport them to Tororo, where they are now used to give life saving care to premature infants born in this part of Uganda. All worked together to help children in an unknown country, whom they would never see, but whose lives would be saved because they cared. |
