Earthquake: 01/21/10

Update from Dr. Campbell in Port-Au-Prince:

Sitting outside on the ramp this night I look up and see the golden moon, so beautiful, shining down in the darkness. But the beauty is short as I hear the sounds of suffering coming from the rooms filled with suffering patients—those who have survived the horror of the disaster, now trying to find tomorrow as the pain of today seems to never end.

The young man lay with tears filling his sunken eyes,, waiting to have his mangled leg removed. He grabbed my hand—take care of me—I love you –hugging me so tightly.

Update from Dr. Campbell in Port-Au-Prince:

Standing in the hospital just before dawn the sensation of swaying came from no where as the walls buckled with the earthquake. Patients began screaming, praying, sobbing as they ran from the building with memories of the week before fresh. Chaos. Broken bodies carried on backs, wheelchairs, pieces of wood. As I held a young man’s leg I could feel the bones moving in my hands, his cries loud in my ears.

Update from Dr. Campbell in Port-Au-Prince:

Broken bodies continue to pour in as people learn we are here……broken bodies, broken lives fill the halls and wings, never stopping. MFI was not able to come in today. They are just north of Haiti in Provo. They will try again tomorrow. All our
families are still here.

The airport is a zoo. I hope they let civilian traffic in soon. Right now it is just military and official relief people. The ramp was full of planes today and I could always see 3 or 4 on final making circles waiting to land. News media is taking up quite a bit of space too.
