Clean Water – Haiti
CLEAN WATER: WATER IS LIFE
The fall of 2016 brought significant drought to the mountains of NE Haiti.
During this time, crops failed and the incidence of malnutrition rose significantly, especially in children.
In addition, the access to clean water was found to be acutely lacking. As a result a proliferation of waterborne disease such as cholera, diphtheria, typhoid, and childhood diarrhea was seen.
In response to this, fundraising efforts began through VPI to help supply clean water to the area.
Using local talent, headed by Vincent St. Fleur, 45 cisterns have been built in 2 months, supplying clean water to over 7000 people living in these remote mountains.
Clean water that they have never had before.
Four cholera-safe latrines were also built to government regulations to ensure that contamination does not occur.
As a result, cases of waterborne disease is now rarely seen in the areas where these water sources have been built.
The need for more clean water is great, and VPI continues to raise funds directed to this project, in the hope of building 55 more water sources for those in this remote area.
The cost of each of these cisterns is between $400-$500.
Maintenance of each cistern is critical as well and essential for the continuation of this project, which impacts so many, and the funds for this are critical.
We will continue to work to this goal, for we know that clean water IS life.
