Second Annual KIDS HELPING KIDS A Huge Success!

On a sunny July day, Village Partners International brought Tampa Bay kids together to race, hula hoop, craft, and play. They sat in circles for folk stories, waited excitedly to get their faces painted, slurped down icy cold snow cones, and packed surgical gauze for future medical mission trips. “I came across the event online and thought it would be nice for my children to learn about giving to others,” said one mom when I asked her why she brought her two kids. They carefully placed the vitamins they brought into the donation box and selected a free sample of Mike’s Pie cheesecake to enjoy before running off to try their hand at making powder by grinding the leaves of the medicinal Moringa tree. Another parent said how much fun her kids had racing with buckets of water balanced on their heads. She especially appreciated the message they heard from Rica, a VPI volunteer and local nurse. Rica explained how kids in Haiti and Uganda have water collection from wells or rivers as a daily chore and she helped the giggling racers appreciate the difference between a simple turn of the tap at their house here in Tampa and the difficult task of carrying water on your head.

Village Partners International was proud to provide this free community play day to the kids of Tampa. We were also delighted to collect many generous donations from the families who attended. We provided more than 80 pairs of brand new sneakers to Beth-El ministries to distribute to the children in Florida farm-worker families. We will be mailing a huge box full of children’s vitamins to the hospital we support in Haiti and we collected funds that will be used for the clean water and nutrition initiatives in the village there. The bright and beautiful sign that greeted everyone declared “Share Love” and we felt that message really permeated the entire Kids Helping Kids event. We shared the mission of VPI with our community and hopefully inspired the next generation to really care about kindness. Thanks to everyone who made this free family day a huge success!
